CALI Decking Highlights Accessible Design on HGTV's Celebrity IOU with The Property Brothers and Actress, Marlee Matlin

We're thrilled to share that CALI Decking was recently featured on HGTV's popular show Celebrity IOU, starring the famous Property Brothers, Jonathan and Drew Scott. In Celebrity IOU Season 7 Episode 10, the talented and inspiring Marlee Matlin surprised her best friend with a stunning backyard renovation, beautifully orchestrated by Drew and Jonathan Scott. The result was a marvel of both style and accessible design.

A Heartfelt Gift with Accessible Design

Winner of an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and four Primetime Emmy Awards, actress and deaf activist Marlee Matlin joined forces with the Property Brothers to create the ultimate custom-made backyard for her dear friend of over 30 years, Lisa Hermatz. The goal was to design a space that was not only beautiful but also exemplified accessible design principles, ensuring it would be enjoyable for everyone.

The Magic of CALI Decking

For this remarkable project, CALI’s super durable composite decking was selected. The pleasing, light slate gray hue of the chosen color, Yosemite, added a touch of elegance to the space, perfectly complementing the overall design. This choice highlights how accessible design can seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Crafting a Deaf-Friendly Haven

Throughout the show, Marlee emphasized the importance of a deaf-friendly design, incorporating elements like round tables, clear lighting, and layouts where people can easily see each other in order to read conversations communicated using American Sign Language. A memorable moment featured Jonathan Scott cutting a rectangular table into a round shape to ensure it was deaf-friendly. Marlee also got hands-on, using a jackhammer to break out an old concrete patio and drilling two pergolas.

Innovative Design Features

Drew Scott selected a hot tub with a vibration-connected sound system, allowing Lisa and her deaf friends to feel the music. The team worked tirelessly for four weeks, creating a beautiful backyard featuring an outdoor kitchen, a round table with swivel chairs, a hot tub, two pergolas, and a large plant stand. They also repainted the home's exterior to a fresh white, completing the fresh, modern transformation.
